Located in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh in central India, Kanha national park is regarded as among the best-managed national parks in Asia. Spreading over 316 sq Km Kanha National Park was originally called the Banjar Valley Sanctuary. The landscape of the sanctuary consists of hilly ranges surrounding a grassy meadow. Dry deciduous forest with a large number of Sal trees covers most of Kanha national park, though bamboo clumps, marshy patches and swamps are also found. Kanha is known for the Swamp Deer or Barasingha, an endangered species, which are found here in significant numbers.
