Delhi's attractions include Mughal monuments such as Humayun's Tomb, heritage sites such as the Qutab Minar, memorials such as Raj Ghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, and shopping arcades which range from crafts bazaars such as Dilli Haat to brand new malls which have mushroomed all over Delhi. Some of the sights you will see when you travel to Delhi with Incredible India travel are:
Red Fort: Every year on India's Independence Day, August 15th, the Prime Minster of India addresses the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort. This impressive fort was built by Shah Jehan the Mughal Emperor who ruled from 1628 to 1658. Its massive red sandstone walls stand proudly overlooking Old Delhi and the nearby Jama Masjid. The sound and light show at the Red Fort is an interactive history lesson on the lives and times of the great Mughals. The buildings within the Red Fort, such as the Diwan-e-Khas and Diwan-e-Am are examples of the fine marble carving of expert Mughal craftsmen.
Qutab Minar: One of Delhi's best known landmarks, the Qutab Minar was begun by Sultan Qutub-ud-din Aibak in 1199 A.D. but completed by Sultan Iltutmish, his son-in-law. A mark of the ascendance of the Delhi Sultanate, the Qutab Minar was built on an area where Delhi's last Hindu King, Prithvi Raj Chauhan's ort once stood.
India Gate: Rajpath, or the Road of Kings, is the central avenue of Delhi which connects the President's mansion or Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate. This arch that reaches to a height of 42 meters, is a memorial to the unknown soldier. It was erected in memory of the British and Indian soldiers who died in the First World War.
Humayun's Tomb: Appreciated for its symmetrical design and stylistic features, this tomb was built by Humayun's consort Hamida Begum. The Mughal Emperor died while kneeling on the steps of his library when he heard the muezzins call for prayer in 1556. Humayun's Tomb with its arrangement of a tomb within a formal garden is believed to have inspired the pattern of later Mughal monuments, such as the Taj Mahal.
Jantar Mantar: A wonderful sight in the heart of Delhi. Jantar Mantar is an astronomical observatory near Delhi's busy shopping center, Connaught Place. One of several observatories constructed by Sawai Jai Singh, the astronomer King of Jaipur, the Jantar Mantar is used even today by astronomers to measure the movement of the planets and stars. The observatory consists of large instruments or structures, on which you can climb and look up at the heavens and wonder about its mysteries, when you travel to Delhi, with Incredible India Travel.
Bahai Temple: This beautiful building combines aesthetic grace with architectural excellence. Built like a lotus in white marble and surrounded by gardens and pools of water, it is an ethereal sight. Within the temple are inscriptions by Bahaullah, the religious leader of the Bahai faith, and benches for visitors to sit and meditate in silence.
